Ernie Hatfield
CLASS OF 2025 - UMPIRE & COACH

Ernie Hatfield’s name is synonymous with consistency, dedication, and a deep love for the game of fastball. His remarkable umpiring career spanned more than 62 years, beginning in 1958 and continuing until 2020, when, at the age of 86, he was still calling balls and strikes, working three games in the Yarmouth Commercial League.

A Level 4 Umpire, Ernie officiated at Nationals, Provincials, and Military Zone championships across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. For over a decade, he served as Umpire-in-Chief for both the Valley region (Windsor to Digby) and 14 Wing Greenwood, guiding and mentoring countless officials.

In addition to his umpiring career, Ernie was an accomplished coach. In 1967, he led the 14 Wing Greenwood Raiders in the Halifax & District League to the National Military Championship. Known by top pitchers as “Mr. Consistency” behind the plate, Ernie’s fairness, sharp eye, and love of the game earned him enduring respect from players and peers alike.
